What You Should Know About Macular Degeneration: Fact vs. Fiction

Macular degeneration affects millions of people worldwide every year. Yet many things people think they know about this all-too-common condition are incorrect. At Northwest Eye Center, we believe in empowering our patients with accurate, reliable information, ensuring that every individual receives personalized care tailored to their unique needs. As we observe Macular Degeneration Awareness Month this February, we’d like to take this opportunity to clear up some common myths and misconceptions.

Understanding Macular Degeneration

So, what is macular degeneration? Simply put, it’s the deterioration of the central part of the retina, known as the macula. If left untreated, this condition can lead to a loss of central vision, complicating activities like reading and driving. There are two types: Dry macular degeneration, the more common form, involves the thinning of the macula, while wet macular degeneration, less common but more severe, is caused by abnormal blood vessels growing under the retina.

One common myth is that macular degeneration inevitably leads to complete blindness. While it significantly impairs vision, it rarely causes total blindness. Another misconception is that it only affects older people. Though more prevalent in older adults, factors like genetics, smoking, and high blood pressure can significantly increase the risk of macular degeneration for younger individuals. Certain injuries to the eye or head can also increase the chances of developing this condition across all age groups.

Additionally, many believe macular degeneration is not dangerous if they don’t notice any change in their vision. On the contrary, macular degeneration often begins to damage the eye even before our patients notice significant symptoms. This makes regular comprehensive eye exams at our Thief River Falls eye clinic necessary for preventing and treating this condition.
